Does Fortnite cost money?

No. Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, Festival and the other modes are free to play. Save the World used to be paid, but it became free on most console and computer versions in April 2026. So a free game download is the real thing, and you never need to pay a website for access.

What you can pay for

All of it is optional, and none of it is needed to play:

  • V-Bucks, which buy skins and other items in the Item Shop.
  • The Battle Pass, reported at 800 V-Bucks this season. See Treasure Hunters.
  • Fortnite Crew, a monthly subscription.

Do I need PS Plus or Game Pass?

Free-to-play games like Fortnite do not generally need a paid online subscription on PlayStation or Xbox, and guides say cloud play does not need Game Pass either. Check your platform's current rules if you see a prompt. See our guides for console, PC and mobile.

Beware of anything else called free

A free game is real, but free V-Bucks generators and free accounts for sale are not. Shared accounts can be stolen back or banned. Read our guide to V-Bucks scams.

Frequently asked questions

No. Separate optional purchases can include cosmetics, passes and subscriptions. Read the current offer before buying, even when the game mode itself is free to enter.

›Is a free V-Bucks generator part of the official game?

No. Do not enter an Epic password, verification code or card details into a third-party reward generator.
