Is Fortnite free on PS5, PS4 and Xbox?

Yes. This video game is free to play in all of its main modes on Fortnite PS5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. You only pay if you choose to buy V-Bucks, passes or a Crew subscription.

How to download Fortnite on console

The steps are nearly the same on each console:

  • PlayStation: open the PlayStation Store on your PS5 or PS4, search for Fortnite and select Download.
  • Xbox: open the Microsoft Store on your console, search for Fortnite and select Get.
  • Open the game and sign in or create your Epic account.

Keep your progress on every console

Your cosmetics and progress belong to your Epic account, so link your console to it. Epic warns that playing on an unlinked console can leave you on a new, empty account. If your items look gone, you are probably on the wrong account. See how to link your account.

Which is better: Xbox or PS5?

Fortnite plays well on both. If you have an Xbox Series S, Series X or PS5, use that version rather than an older console's. You can play with friends across platforms, so pick the one you already own. Without a console, you can stream it through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Frequently asked questions

›Which Epic account should I link to my console?

Use the account that already holds your Fortnite progress. Confirm the linked platform accounts on Epic's own website before creating another account or unlinking anything.

›Why do my items look missing on a different console?

Check the Epic account linked to that console first. The official account-help pages cited here explain how an account mismatch can make progress appear missing.
