Free V-Bucks scams: how they work and how to stay safe

Updated

Why V-Bucks generators are always scams, and what to do if you fell for one.

The short answer

No website, app or video can add V-Bucks to your account from outside the game. V-Bucks balances live on Epic's servers. A "generator" has no way to change them, whatever its progress bar shows.

How the scam works

The page asks for your username, shows a fake progress bar and then demands something from you to "verify" the transfer. What it wants varies, and each one earns the scammer something:

  • Your Epic login, which lets them take and resell your account.
  • A survey or app install, which pays them a commission.
  • A browser extension or download, which can carry malware.
  • A card number for a "small verification fee".

Warning signs

If you see any of these, close the page:

  • It promises V-Bucks or a rare Outfit for free, with no catch explained.
  • It asks you to log in anywhere other than an official Epic Games page.
  • It counts down, or claims that only a few rewards are left.
  • Comments on the page all praise it in nearly the same words.

If you already entered your details

Change your Epic password straight away, and change it anywhere else you used the same one. Turn on two-factor authentication in your Epic account, and log out of all other sessions if the option is offered. If you entered card details, contact your bank. If you installed anything, remove it and run a malware scan. Then contact Epic Games support if you have lost access.

How V-Bucks really arrive

You get V-Bucks by buying them in the game or through official retailers, or by earning them through in-game rewards. Check the Battle Pass or the in-game store for what is currently offered. Those are the only routes you need to know.
